Part of the beloved “What Can I Do?” brand by Kevin Hayes, books that empower children to dream, learn, and lead with kindness.
Kevin Hayes is a father, an entrepreneur, and a retired military professor. He is from Columbia, South Carolina, and is currently based in San Antonio, Texas. Kevin is a technology and real estate consultant who holds advanced degrees in Computer Science and Business from the University of Maryland, Webster University, and Texas A&M University. Kevin has a passion for leading and developing the youth and loves helping others achieve their goals. His debut children's book, What Can I Do?, as well as the 5 Book Career Day Series (Healthcare, Business/Finance, Technology, Entertainment/Sports), and the Major League Sports Series, were inspired by his family and friends to spark kids' interests early in the vast careers and opportunities available in life.
Kevin Hayes What Can I Do? Let's Become a Professional is a pretty straightforward book overall. We follow a young monster as he explores what basically amounts to a career fair where he learns about a surprisingly expansive number of different jobs and some skill sets that are useful to have for them. And while I did like the concept overall and the abundance of information that the book provides, I don't know that I believe this book is going to do the best job of keeping a kid's attention all throughout it.
There's a lot of stuff in here that's definitely good for a kid to learn, but I imagine any kiddo picking this up is far enough away from the time period in their life where they'd need to look at future job prospects that this isn't going to hold their attention for long and will likely not be something they remember well by the time they actually are looking into that future. Additionally, this is definitely not a book for emerging readers and there's a lot of text, so I'd recommend it for middlegrade readers over young kids.
The art was cute and colorful, kind of building what I consider to be a separation between the age that the text suggests a kid should be reading this and the age a kid would be to have a high interest in this sort of artwork. It's a bit of a mixed bag, I think. But, any child who adores monsters will definitely be interested in this and I hope many kids will find the creative names of the adult monsters with jobs rather amusing. I really liked Principal Page and Coach Roar.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
What Can I Do? Let's Become a Professional follows Rex, a curious little monster who wants to understand what it really means to be a professional, so he visits Career Square and meets people from all kinds of jobs, from doctors and teachers to chefs, artists, and coders. What I loved most is how the story gently shows that being professional is not about what you wear or what job you have, but about being kind, prepared, focused, and helpful wherever you are. The lessons feel natural and easy to understand, and the bright illustrations and friendly monster characters kept the pages turning. I enjoyed reading this because it sparked great conversations and reminded me that character matters just as much as career.
This book had me smiling from page one and cheering for Rex like he was my own little monster buddy.
I loved how What Can I Do? Let’s Become a Professional makes big ideas feel simple and fun without talking down to kids. Watching Rex bounce around Career Square and learn that being professional means listening, helping, practicing, and being kind honestly felt refreshing. I kept thinking how great this would be for classrooms and bedtime because it teaches real life values in a way that feels playful instead of preachy. If you want a book that helps kids feel confident about who they are and excited about who they can become, this one is a total win. 👏👾
Big Dreams, Kind Hearts, and One Very Professional Monster This book proves that being a professional is not about fancy jobs or outfits but about showing up with kindness, focus, and a big heart, and Rex makes learning that lesson an absolute joy.
